Peter May Ltd is thrilled by the win of Apprentice of the Year in tier two and overall winner of Apprentice of the year 2014, by Travis Howden, at the recent National MITO apprentice competitions.
The awards were presented to Mr Howden at the OFPANZ (Outdoor Fabric Products Association of New Zealand) conference in Auckland at the weekend by the Chief Executive of the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO), Janet Lane.
In making her congratulatory speech Mrs Janet Lane, CEO of MITO acknowledged the very high level of award entries. For the first time ever a special highly commended was also given in this class to reflect just how difficult it was to judge an overall winner.
Travis’s attention to detail has placed him well with his entry of a travel bag with a sewn in lining and leather tag. “It took the judges quite some time to figure out just how Travis had managed to achieve his seamless look” said Danicia Manning, Executive Officer of OFPANZ.
This is not the first win by a staff member at Peter May Ltd, with two past staff having received the Apprentice of the Year title in 2002 and 2005.
This year’s prize carries with it a $750 prize.
Travis was supported by Toni and Peter May as he prepared his entry with time to complete his entry.
Travis has worked full time for us for since 2011, and is showing he has the skills to be a very skilled tradesman with a lot of potential, said Peter. We are thrilled that he has been recognized in this way.
